Recent Case - Public Inquiry: Company let down by 'Remote Transport Manager'

With only around two weeks before a recent Public Inquiry, A S Miles Consulting were engaged by a Midlands based company to assist them, as they had reached a point of despair and lack of action with their current transport manager.

On attending the clients Operating Centre we found no systems of any worth being used, so simply installed all of our standard systems; the maintenance was not as it should have been and there was - apart from some emails - no evidence that the transport manager had actually attended the operation in some years.

This might seem a silly question but on examining the data that we have gathered in the last decade only 7% of the businesses that we work with want to be the best, full stop.

The others fall into the category of ‘We want to be better than our competitors’ – 63 % and the other 30% want to do just enough to not get caught.

When Doing Nothing Is Simply Fatal

A S Miles Consulting recently had a call to provide consultancy support to a client with a Public Inquiry which immediately caused us some concerns.

Once our Managing Director started to work with the client and their legal team it became apparent that the client had originally had a poor DVSA visit some 18 months previous which had identified a large number of serious issues with the Compliance of the Operator Licence.

The client had then undertaken some improvements. It must also be noted that the DVSA took a very supportive position rather than immediately decide to prosecute on this case.

Six months later the DVSA made a return visit to check on progress. They were dismayed that the client had not really grasped the serious position that they were in.

When you receive the Traffic Commissioners calling in letter you really do need to get serious and take action.

AS Miles Consulting were called in by a new client to help them with only 3 weeks to go before the Public Inquiry.

This was a pity because the incident that had triggered the call to Public Inquiry had happened some 7 months before.

The Used or Rental Trucks that could cost you your O Licence and Repute

There is a Ticking Time Bomb in the used Truck Market and no one seems to want to do anything to inspire confidence back into the market.

I am talking about Adblu traps, Diversions, emulators, software and any other such 'emissions cheat devices' that have been fitted to trucks by previous owners that are then finding their way into the used truck market.

Loss of Repute = Loss of Licence

This month one of the Public Inquiries that we have attended in Cambridge involved a client where there was some rather difficult issues surrounding the case.

The client was very sensitive to these and really was not keen to be, as they saw it, 'airing dirty laundry in public'.
