What spot checks do you, or your Transport Manager, carry out within your operation? When did you last carry out spot checks? Spot checks are vital to ensure standards are being maintained, and nobody within the operation is attempting to deceive yourself.

A S Miles Consulting recently had a call to provide consultancy support to a client with a Public Inquiry which immediately caused us some concerns.
Once our Managing Director started to work with the client and their legal team it became apparent that the client had originally had a poor DVSA visit some 18 months previous which had identified a large number of serious issues with the Compliance of the Operator Licence.
The client had then undertaken some improvements. It must also be noted that the DVSA took a very supportive position rather than immediately decide to prosecute on this case.
Six months later the DVSA made a return visit to check on progress. They were dismayed that the client had not really grasped the serious position that they were in.

The answer is probably along the lines of "He's not qualified to do accountancy, or she has no previous experience of doing VAT returns".
And all of those would probably be true.
So why do people let their Accountant give them advice on Operator Licence Compliance?

A very upset and distressed owner of a firm with a nice Transport operation that we have worked with on an 'as and when' basis for a few years now. We speak monthly if only to rib each other on the progress or lack of, with our respective Rugby teams.

Tomorrow and 'Before Breakfast O'clock' I will be carrying out spot checks on the Morning shift to check the quality of the DDI's.
This will be interesting as I will have used skills gained in the Police to sit up and oberve them first. So I'll know the answer before they give me any answers.
