When did you last listen to your drivers?

Does this seem a daft question? Not asking your drivers a few key questions and then listening to the replies could be costing your business in more ways than one.

When we ask the question ‘When did you last listen to your drivers?’ we don’t mean ask them about the football last night and go, ‘Umm…’ and ‘Yes, really?’ ….. and ‘4 – 3 on Penalties …?’

When - as a Director, Transport Manager or Supervisor - did you sit down, with a brew, and ask your drivers some of the really important questions and then carefully listen to the answers they gave?

This might seem a silly question but on examining the data that we have gathered in the last decade only 7% of the businesses that we work with want to be the best, full stop.

The others fall into the category of ‘We want to be better than our competitors’ – 63 % and the other 30% want to do just enough to not get caught.

A S Miles Consulting recently had a call to provide consultancy support to a client with a Public Inquiry which immediately caused us some concerns.

Six months later the DVSA made a return visit to check on progress. They were dismayed that the client had not really grasped the serious position that they were in.

Would you let your Transport Manager do your VAT return?

    If not, then Why not?

The answer is probably along the lines of "He's not qualified to do accountancy, or she has no previous experience of doing VAT returns".

And all of those would probably be true.

So why do people let their Accountant give them advice on Operator Licence Compliance?

Yes, unfortunately that was the phone call that I had at 05:47 this morning, 1st January 2018.

A very upset and distressed owner of a firm with a nice Transport operation that we have worked with on an 'as and when' basis for a few years now. We speak monthly if only to rib each other on the progress or lack of, with our respective Rugby teams.

Tomorrow and 'Before Breakfast O'clock' I will be carrying out spot checks on the Morning shift to check the quality of the DDI's.

This will be interesting as I will have used skills gained in the Police to sit up and oberve them first. So I'll know the answer before they give me any answers.
