In recent months, several DAF trucks have been stopped by Belgian police due to exceeding the maximum vehicle length. The cause? The aerodynamic cabs designed to improve fuel efficiency and safety. As a result, we reached out to the DAF dealer in Belgium and Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) to clarify the situation. It turns out that Belgium has specific national legislation regulating these circumstances.

Understanding the Legislation and Length Limits

According to Directive 2007/46/EC, which has been in effect since May 7, 2020, the following rules apply to vehicles upgraded for energy efficiency and aerodynamics:

  • Aerodynamic Cabs: Vehicles equipped with these cabs may exceed the maximum length if they contribute to improved aerodynamics, energy efficiency, and safety.
  • Aerodynamic Devices Over 500 mm: These must be type-approved according to the directive’s requirements before the vehicle is put into service.
  • Compatibility with Intermodal Transport: Aerodynamic devices must be compatible with intermodal transport, and in the retracted or folded position, they should not extend the vehicle length by more than 20 cm.
  • Manoeuvrability Requirements: Vehicles with these cabs must be able to describe a circle with an external radius of 12.50 m and an internal radius of 5.30 m.
  • No Increase in Loading Capacity: The length exceedances must not increase the vehicle’s loading length or capacity.

What This Means for DAF Truck Operators

If you operate a DAF truck with an aerodynamic cab, it’s essential to be aware of these regulations to avoid penalties and delays. Mr. John Genetello of DAF Trucks Benelux has prepared a detailed document for all customers using these DAF models. Available in French, Dutch, and English, this document can be shared with your drivers to ensure they are prepared if stopped by authorities.

Stay informed and ensure your fleet remains compliant with these regulations to avoid any unnecessary downtime.

Thanks to DAF Trucks Benelux & TLN for their assistance in clarifying these regulations.

Be Safe, Compliant & Profitable.
